For those who would like to spend New Year’s Eve in San Gimignano, we would like to offer some historical advices on the territory
San Gimignano is part of the area, in senese territory, named “Alta Val d’Elsa” where are also included cities such as Casole d’Elsa, Colle di Val D’Elsa, Monteriggioni, Poggibonsi and Radicondoli ,which development begins in the Middle Ages.The City is part of UNESCO World Heritage sites since 1990.
All the area was interested by the passing of “la via Francigena”.
Borderland between the Tuscan powers of the time ,Florence and Siena,it has often been the battlefield for opposite factions.
In 1199 the Casaglia war, saw the troops of Colle d’Elsa and San Gimignano clash against Poggibonsi, until borders and domains weren’t scrupulously redefined and stabilized.
In 1269 took place the bloody battle of Colle in which Colle and Firenze fought together against Siena,for the crushing defeat of the last one.
After having developed in a less or more definitive way the identities of the various local realities, the towns of “Alta Val D’Elsa” have continued to develop and establish in time.
