Hiking the Via Francigena

The Via Francigena was once the route that led from Canterbury to Rome, travelled mainly from the second millennium AD onwards by thousands of pilgrims travelling to Rome.  In recent years it has been rediscovered due to the cultural and religious importance of the Via Francigena and, where possible, has been restored to make it still accessible on foot.

Today, the Via Francigena is compared in importance to the famous Way of Saint James to Santiago de Compostela.  One of the stages runs from the Church of Christ the King in Gambassi Terme to Piazza della Cisterna in San Gimignano, a stage which is easy to walk in about 4 hours over  about 13 kilometres.  Along the way you can visit the Sanctuary of Pancole and the enchanting Parish Church of Cellole.
